Under consideration PE2261: Reinstate the local connection rule for homeless people in Scotland
Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to put local homeless people first and require people who declare themselves to be homeless to demonstrate a local connection.
Background information
In Scotland you can declare yourself to be homeless and have your needs met without having to demonstrate a local connection.
Scottish councils also can’t refer applicants to another Scottish council based on local connection.
I consider that this has enabled the mass influx of mainly male asylum seekers into Glasgow and Scotland - an influx which shows no signs of stopping.
I believe that because of the absence of a local connection rule, these men in reality are prioritised in terms of having their homelessness needs met over locals.
This is unfair, and given that Glasgow and Scotland has some of the most deprived communities in the UK and the world (as demonstrated by the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation), it is to my mind a deeply, deeply negligent act.
Local homeless families find themselves competing with majority men from outside of Europe, and put last, and therefore made extremely vulnerable.
