Under consideration PE2279: Create equal mesh care pathways for all mesh-injured patients in Scotland
Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to introduce equal specialist mesh care pathways for all patients harmed by surgical mesh, including gynaecological, hernia, bowel and all other mesh procedures, and for the adoption of the BRAN model (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives and doing Nothing) as the national standard for informed consent across NHS Scotland, alongside stronger accountability measures to ensure patients harmed by healthcare decisions receive truth, transparency and fair representation.
Background information
Surgical mesh is widely used in procedures such as hernia, bowel and pelvic repair. While Scotland has introduced specialist services following concerns surrounding transvaginal mesh, many patients harmed by hernia, bowel, pelvic and other mesh procedures still report unequal access to specialist diagnostics, treatment and support.
Many patients are living with chronic pain, nerve damage, autoimmune complications, sexual dysfunction and a significantly reduced quality of life, without access to specialist diagnostics, treatment and support.
This petition calls for equal specialist mesh care pathways for all mesh-injured patients; multidisciplinary mesh clinics, including psychological support; clinician training in diagnosing mesh complications, native tissue repair techniques and mesh removal; adoption of the BRAN model for informed consent, supported by standardised national patient information leaflets detailing risks, benefits and alternatives to mesh and non-mesh repair; comprehensive data collection and long-term monitoring of mesh complications and outcomes; national clinical guidance on appropriate mesh use, and stronger transparency and accountability when patients are harmed by healthcare decisions.
