Under consideration PE2285: Install driver location signs at 500-metre intervals on motorways and major A roads
Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to evaluate and implement a standardised system of high visibility motorway location signs, similar to those deployed at 500 metre intervals on English motorways. These boards provide clear positional information essential for incident reporting, emergency response, and operational management.
Background information
In England, motorways such as the M6, and the M1, as well as some A roads, have a series of location signs, placed at 500m-intervals. These are considered essential in emergencies where the emergency services need a precise location.
Some motorways in Scotland have small marker posts with similar chainage numbers to the English signs but have no carriageway indicators or motorway numbers. These small posts are often missing or broken and the numbers on them are too small for many people to read. This cannot be considered safe and acceptable.
It is not possible for people to rely solely on Google Maps or Junction numbers to determine their location. The phone signal may be patchy, or the person’s mobile phone may run out of battery. Junctions are also spaced too irregularly and are too far apart to be helpful for locating breakdowns, particularly on rural roads.
